Jose Mourinho’s side will face off against Tottenham and La Liga holders Barcelona, in the race to sign Dutch international Frenkie de Jong. The 21 year old superstar has really impressed in recent times and is on the radar of Manchester United, along with their European rivals, with a number of clubs trying their best to add him to their squad.
Initially, it was the north London outfit facing off against the Catalan giants, though it seems now that the Red Devils have entered the race to bring him to Old Trafford too.
The young star has made a total of 30 league appearances for Ajax and has managed to score a single goal so far. He has also grown amongst their ranks and has made it to the national side now, with a lot of expectations from him for the future.
With that being said, these top English clubs are looking to add him to their squad and it is now Mourinho, who has his eyes set on this player as well. He can be a talent for the future, if he can fit into the playing style of the top flight of English football soon.
However, it will not be easy for United to sign him and bring him to The Theatre of Dreams, with the likes of Barca in hot pursuit as well. On the other hand, Spurs want him too and Champions League football will surely have an impact on his decision.
If the club from Manchester can finish in the top four in the current season, they may have the chance to sign him, as they are one of the biggest clubs in England. If they fail to do so, they might either lose out to their domestic rivals or Barca.
The report adds that United might try to sign him in January, after a rather quiet summer transfer window. If they can push the deal through, it might really help their cause of winning more titles. Mourinho is keen on lift the Premier League title once again and make a name for himself in Europe, with Champions League glory.
He has been looking at a long list of players to sign for the same, though things did not work out for him at the start of the new campaign. If the offer is right, he might be able to add players like De Jong, though it will be interesting to see which club eventually is able to get their hands on this high quality star.
Spurs was one of the least spending clubs in the summer transfer window and will surely look to challenge for this talented youngster. The club from Catalonia on the other hand have signed quite a few players (including midfielders) and might reconsider their interest in his services.
It all depends on how serious United are in his services, as they do have the money to tempt Ajax to doing business with them once again, after the Daley Blind deal in recent times.
