As Bayern Munich have turned into the whole Bundesliga into their academy, Tottenham is the same to Real Madrid and Liverpool to Barcelona. First, it was Luis Suarez, then it was Philippe Coutinho who joined last time to the Catalan club. Now according to the recent rumours, the Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno is on the radar of the Spanish club who may join Barcelona as the backup of Jordi Alba. Liverpool fullback Alberto Moreno has been surprisingly linked with a move to La Liga defending champions Barcelona. According to the reports, the Blaugrana have identified him as a potential backup for current fullback Jordi Alba. There is another player named Jose Luis Gaya who is another consideration according to the same report but Moreno could be available for a cut-price fee, he could be a better option for the Catalans.
Moreno’s contract expires next summer which means Liverpool may want to get rid of him in the January transfer window to squeeze a bit of money and potentially sign an alternative. Though the left back showed a plenty of promises early on during his Liverpool career, Moreno has struggled to keep up with the pace of the game. He had a reputation of being an attack-minded fullback but some of his mistakes were unforgivable as Liverpool lost quite a few points with him playing as the left-back.
Jürgen Klopp showed him trust even after a disastrous UEFA Europa League final. Moreno was given another chance and started a few games as the left-back. However, an untimely injury gave Andy Robertson his chance and the Scotland international hasn’t looked back ever since. Liverpool’s style suits Moreno while attacking forward, much like Barca’s, but it doesn’t seem like Moreno has improved defensively. He is 26 and still has the time on his shoulders but Liverpool simply cannot afford to wait anymore. Moreno had his chances though it doesn’t seem like the club will get anywhere if they persist with the Spaniard.
The former Sevilla man started against Chelsea almost a fortnight ago in the Carabao Cup but again he put on a disappointing display as he was once again found out of position quite a few times. However, Moreno can be a handy back up for the Catalan club. The team has plenty of creativity down the middle, and even Messi tends to drop deep and provide passes for the likes of Alba and Semedo as the side stretch play and break down teams. If there are any chances that Moreno succeeds at, then it’s his attacking ability as he was a winger previously at Sevilla under Unai Emery. However, Barcelona general manager Pep Segura has denied any chances that there will be any full-backs arriving during the new year.
Though it’s obvious that Barcelona want to strengthen at left-back to provide extra competition for Jordi Alba. Lucas Digne’s move to Everton during the summer has left Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde short of options at the back. However Alba needs rest between fixtures and Barcelona need to solve that problem for sure.
