The Virender Sehwag Story- Team India lost the final ODI game of the three-match series against Sri Lanka. Though they won the series 2-1, their performance in the last game was far from convincing. Keeping that in mind, some of the Indian players would not have been happy with the way that they played. They would want to focus on improving in the upcoming T20s and in the IPL 2021 second phase as well.
However, some of the players may not get a chance in the ODI format anytime soon. That is what former Indian cricketer and now turned commentator and Pundit Virender Sehwag believes. The legendary opening batsman has had his say on the future of one player in the ODI format.
What Did Virender Sehwag Say About This Indian Player In A Recent Comment?
Virender Sehwag has been very positive with the selection of youth to represent India in Sri Lanka. He has called this team even better than the one in England. That was to rebuttal comments calling this a B-team. Despite the applause, he has now come out and given a few players harsh criticism too.
One player that Viru feels will not be given a chance again in ODIs now is Manish Pandey. The batsman has been poor in recent times and was only picked mainly for his fielding, which was the best asset to the team. Though the player had decent starts, he failed to convert it into anything big.
He was one of the more experienced players in the squad and should have led by example. However, that did not happen and he was a major disappointment.
Here is what Viru said about Manish Pandey in a conversation with CricBuzz that grabbed a lot of attention on Social Media-
“Here was the perfect opportunity for Manish Pandey. Even Hardik Pandya for that matter could have done so much more. Both had scored just some 15-20 runs. So they disappointed me the most. In this three-match series, if anyone benefitted the most. It was Pandey. He played all three matches and got the chance to bat. On all three occasions, the situation was not challenging either that he had to accelerate.
“So, I believe Pandey has disappointed me the most. Perhaps he may no longer get a chance in ODIs for India. Even if he does, it is not going to be for a long time at least. Since he lost the opportunity to score in these three matches, where he could have shined. He has fallen behind in the pecking order now. Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan have scored runs. So these two will be considered ahead of him in the middle order.”
Well, if Virender Sehwag is right now, it will be a huge disappointment for Pandey. He will have to really outshine a lot of other stars in the upcoming games if he wants to make a name for himself. The IPL 2021 could boost his chances to feature in the team once again. However, whether that will be enough to change the mind of the selectors in the upcoming days or not, remains to be seen. Let’s wait and watch what the future holds for the Sunrisers Hyderabad star.
