South Africa set a 279-run target for India in the second ODI, which took place on Sunday at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. However, thanks to Shreyas Iyer’s second ODI century and Ishan Kishan’s flashy 93, India made a mockery of the target.
The team led by Shikhar Dhawan tied the three-game set 1-1. At one point, India was 48 for 2 after losing both of their openers, Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill.
However, Iyer and Kishan worked together to score 169 runs, which helped India win with 25 balls to spare. Aiden Markram (79) and Reeza Hendricks (74) helped South Africa get to 278 for 7 in 50 overs. Mohammed Siraj’s 3 for 38 in 10 overs was impressive, and Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Kuldeep Yadav, and Shardul Thakur each got one wicket. In the game between India and South Africa, South Africa’s stand-in captain, Keshav Maharaj, chose to bat first.
India was clinical in the second ODI against South Africa
On a pitch that was slow and low, the Indian bowlers’ change of pace worked well. Shardul got Wayne Parnell out with one of these deliveries. Before Miller hit two fours in a row off Shardul, South Africa hadn’t hit a boundary in almost seven overs. But Siraj, who bowled three of the last five overs, kept it tight. He also got the wicket of South Africa’s stand-in captain, Keshav Maharaj, to keep them in check.
As clinical as India’s second-best team can get. A job that even the biggest stars would be proud of. Now, 278 wasn’t scary, but it was a challenge on a pitch where the older ball looked hard to score on. Even more so against this Indian batting line-up that is mostly young.
Iyer scores a century
When Dhawan, an experienced player, and Gill, who looked like he knew what he was doing, got out during the first powerplay, the job got harder. Given how things went in the last game, SA were probably smelling blood at this point, but Kishan and Iyer’s partnership won the game for India.
Both of them were fluent from the start, and because they were so good at playing spin, they were able to handle any problems that the visitors threw at them. Kishan took full advantage of his good matchups by destroying the left-arm spinners and, later, the pacers as well.
Iyer was as calm as usual, and the chaos around him helped him pace his innings well. Kishan missed out on a century, but by the time he was out, the game was pretty much over.
Samson stayed with Iyer for the rest of the ceremonies, and Iyer eventually got to a well-deserved ton. SA will be upset about this loss. They might have wanted another 15–20 runs, but it’s also true that the dew made it easier for the Indians to catch up.
