Bland’s death occurred at a hospital in George, South Africa, following a courageous battle with cancer. Surrounded by his loving family and his loyal companion, a bulldog named Handsome, Bland found peace in his final moments.

His wife, Sonja, expressed the family’s relief that John’s suffering had come to an end. Sonja fondly reminisced about their 25-year journey together, emphasizing the exceptional qualities that made John a remarkable man. Throughout this challenging time, the Bland family was overwhelmed by the incredible support and love from John’s lifelong friends. In 1970, Bland secured a significant victory at the Transvaal Open, joining the ranks of champions such as Sid and Jock Brews, Bobby Locke, and Gary Player.

A notable triumph came in 1977 when Bland emerged victorious over Gary Player to claim the South African PGA Championship. His success on the Sunshine Tour continued to flourish, earning him a remarkable 19 titles. Bland also left an indelible mark on the DP World Tour (formerly known as the European Tour), triumphing twice. At the pinnacle of his career, he achieved a career-high ranking of 48th on the Official World Golf Ranking.
