Mauricio Pochettino Is On A Mission; Will Try Fixing Chelsea’s Problems In The Summer Transfer Window

Pochettino Wants Chelsea To Sign The €12 Million Rated Argentine Playmaker In 2023

Mauricio Pochettino faces a challenging task of addressing several issues at Chelsea during the upcoming summer transfer window. The team’s on-pitch performances have been disappointing. The decisions made at the boardroom level over the past year have come under significant scrutiny.

The first major challenge for Pochettino is managing the summer transfer window. While the team requires reinforcements in three key positions, prioritizing player departures is likely to take precedence before the start of the 2023/24 season. Chelsea’s official website lists 27 first-team players at the club, including loaned players. It indicates that a substantial number of departures will be necessary to facilitate new signings.

Departures As Priority For Pochettino

Joao Felix and Denis Zakaria, on loan from Atletico Madrid and Juventus respectively, will return to their parent clubs as Pochettino has decided against permanent signings. The next crucial decision for Pochettino will be identifying an incoming midfielder, which is his top transfer priority. The player he desires for that position has already been identified.

Sporting CP’s Manuel Ugarte appears to be on the verge of a summer move. Pochettino is pushing hard to secure him as his first official signing for the club. Additionally, a striker and a goalkeeper have been identified as positions where Chelsea aims to secure first-choice options. With no natural senior forward, aside from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and uncertainties surrounding Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy in the goalkeeper position, reinforcements are crucial.

Edouard Mendy is likely to be among the departures, as contract talks have shown no progress this season. Kepa’s future remains uncertain, and although he has impressed at times, it is likely that a new goalkeeper will be signed.

Inter’s Andre Onana has been linked as the main target. Chelsea even attempted a swap deal involving Kepa to bring the former Ajax player to Stamford Bridge. Although the proposal was rejected, Chelsea’s interest in Onana remains. However, a completed £12 million transfer for Gabriel Slonina, who joined from Chicago Fire last summer, could provide Pochettino with a solution to the goalkeeping problem.

Key Signings Required In Midfield, Striker And Goalkeeper Positions For Mauricio Pochettino

Despite not making a senior appearance yet, Slonina has made a strong impression with outstanding saves in first-team training. Also, impressive performances in Premier League 2, and remarkable displays on the international stage. Currently representing the U.S. at the U20 World Cup, Slonina has kept clean sheets in all four matches played by his team, demonstrating his abilities.

Pochettino is known for giving opportunities to young players, and he may choose to allow the 19-year-old Slonina to showcase his talent during pre-season before making a decision on a potential loan move. Frank Lampard’s decision to give Mendy a final chance to salvage his Chelsea career against Nottingham Forest. That highlighted the need for a goalkeeper addition. Pochettino might believe that he already has the ideal solution within the club.

In conclusion, Mauricio Pochettino faces a significant challenge in rectifying Chelsea’s problems during the summer transfer window. Departures are a priority, and key signings are required in the midfield, striker, and goalkeeper positions. Pochettino’s strategic decisions and the success of his signings will play a crucial role in shaping Chelsea’s fortunes in the upcoming season.
