Glenn Maxwell was a demigod against Afghanistan. He was wielding the bat like a wand. That too, with the ball following his direction as if it were enchanted by it. That knock took Australia from the brink of certain embarrassment to a historic victory. And secured their spot in the final 4 of the CWC 2023 tournament!!
Such was the magnificence of the knock that FOX Cricket in their Social Media spaces have come out with a list of the top 10 greatest ODI knocks of all time. Glenn Maxwell’s latest blitz in Mumbai took the top spot. Rohit’s 264, Sir Viv, Saeed Anwar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Herschelle Gibbs, Adam Gilchrist, Kapil Dev, AB de Villiers, and Martin Guptill find themselves in the exclusive list.
While most of those knocks are valid and guaranteed their place in the pantheon of the greatest knocks in this format of the game, there are certain schools of thought that believe that there are some knocks that have been left out in this list that have a valid and legitimate claim to be in that list for a myriad of reasons. However, there are three knocks by a certain legend of the game that can easily find themselves in this list. If not 3, at least 1 of the knocks is enough on its own to make this list.

The first knock in question will obviously be the 200 he scored against South Africa at Gwalior in 2010. The knock is significant in ODI cricket for a number of reasons. The first-ever 200 in ODIs, the first Indian to do so as well as staying unbeaten doing it.
Countless players were stranded in the 190s. But being the first one to breach the 200 mark was enough validation for the knock to be inducted into the top-10 greatest knocks of all time. That is, with all due respect to the rest of the innings in the list. Add to the fact that it was at a time when there were questions being asked about the great man’s future in the game!! The knock was special, significant, and historic. Sachin did enough to fulfill all the required criteria to be inducted in that list.
The other two are knocks that would normally not have so much relevance. But the time and the manner in which those knocks were executed could easily elevate their status in any shape or form. In fact, such was the impact and the ferocity of those knocks that they were given a separate name altogether. Something that neither of the top-10 knocks have.
The knocks in question are the ‘Desert Storm’ in Sharjah. It more or less confirmed Sachin’s status as the greatest batter of his generation. That too, against a gun Australian side with the odds against his favor. Sachin Tendulkar went on an absolute rampage by creaming bowlers to all corners of the ground which led to a historic win for the Men in Blue. His 143 in a do-or-die situation. And the subsequent 134 against the same opponents are innings that deserve more recognition.
