In the current summer transfer market, many English clubs are urgently making moves. Not all of them are looking for big names. Some are exploring alternatives that offer room for manoeuvre and a balance between cost and performance. In this context, Geny Catamo has entered the scene. The Mozambican footballer has shown courage and consistency at Sporting CP.

He has mainly played on the right wing as a full-back, although his official profile lists him as a winger. This detail has not gone unnoticed by several Premier League clubs. Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Fulham are already on the case. They all want to know if there is any crack in the £60 million wall protecting his departure.

According to Caught Offside, Arsenal has emerged as one of the teams considering Catamo as a viable solution after losing Leroy Sané, who opted to sign with Galatasaray. That decision left Mikel Arteta’s team with a gap in their planning. The coach is looking for a player capable of competing with Bukayo Saka or even covering more defensive positions if necessary. However, the London club is not considering paying a figure close to £60 million. It would only come into play if the price drops dramatically. For now, they are keeping an eye on the situation, but with a clear policy: to avoid excessive spending on a player who is still developing.

Opinion:

There is a lot to consider here. First, if the objective is to get a cost-effective reinforcement, Catamo meets several requirements. He has European experience, plays in a competitive league and possesses technical qualities that can be developed further. His versatility is an advantage. Arteta has used Tomiyasu, White and Zinchenko in multiple defensive and offensive roles. Catamo would fit that mould. He can play as a natural winger, but also cover the wing if defensive solidity is required in specific matches. That could give him important minutes without displacing Saka from his natural position.

Even so, the economic context imposes limits. Arsenal cannot jump at every opportunity as it did in previous cycles. Now it is moving cautiously. If Sporting CP does not drop below 60 million, there will hardly be a deal.

Trying an offer close to 25-30 million, as other clubs are considering, makes sense. It serves to gauge the Portuguese club’s position and at the same time does not compromise the team’s resources. If Sporting rejects outright, Arsenal can move on without any damage. If there is openness, the club could find an interesting opportunity.

In my opinion, Arsenal should test the waters with a lower offer. It does not compromise their roadmap and keeps open the possibility of adding a useful player. Catamo does not need to be an undisputed starter from day one. It is enough for him to provide depth and balance.

If his price is close to half the clause, then the risk is reduced. But if Sporting stands firm, it would be sensible to look at other options. There are players in secondary markets with similar characteristics and more affordable prices. Catamo has talent, yes, but the context calls for a cool head.
