2021 was an absolutely phenomenal year for Andrew Garfield from a professional standpoint. After a lengthy hiatus, he was back, and boy was he back. After back to back releases in “The Eyes Of Tammy Faye” and “Tick, Tick….. Boom”, which has placed him front and centre for Oscar contention in the Best Actor category. And then the bombshell, where contrary to sly denials and the hide and seek with the media, he reprised his role of Peter Parker in Sony’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, alongside the reigning Spidey Tom Holland and the OG web-slinger Tobey Maguire.
In a Candid Interview with Variety, Garfield revealed the actual reason why he returned to the popular movie series. He was actually not expecting to have the conversation about rejoining the series once again, but he further added that the pitch he received from Amy Pascal, Kevin Feige and Jon Watts appealed to the fan inside him, and from there on, he just couldn’t say no.
He went on to speak about the pitch where he was told, “You played this character in your way and what would you explore if you had the opportunity? If you were dumped into this other universe and faced with this younger you and older you, how will you respond”. They also went on to talk about mentorship, brotherhood, and that then sealed the deal for him.
Asked about the impact that He and Tobey had on Tom’s Spiderman, He went on to say that their impact wasn’t just limited to the pleasantries, or just a Hi or Bye etc. He said, ” My Spiderman got to save his younger brother’s romantic relationship and heal his most traumatic moment by doing it for his younger brother, which makes it cosmically beautiful from a viewer standpoint.
Further speaking, after being asked about his time off-screen with the fellow spider-men, he said that from a normal view, it was just three ordinary dudes who were actors and were hanging out, but once when seeing it from a fan perspective you go, “Oh my god we’re all together and doing the pointing thing. They used to have deeper conversations as well and talk about their experiences with the characters, further going on to say that there was a line he said in the movie, where he looked at Maguire and Tom and tells them that he loves them, he actually loved them.
Talking about this being a redemption for his version of the Webslinger, he added that he was glad that he was able to tie up the loose ends and finally gain complete closure for his unanswered questions at the same time, supporting Tom’s character and not distracting and detracting from it.
Finally, on being asked if he was open to returning as Spidey in the future, he said that he would definitely return if there was something and if it feels right, also adding that he would have to feel very confident and certain in himself if he would have to pull this off. So what do you think? would you love to see Garfield back? Personally would love to, but only time will tell.
