IPL 2023 Update: There a Sanskrit slogan engraved on the IPL trophy which in all intents and purposes is the principal theme of every tournament. The phrase means “Where Talent meets Opportunity”. And that rings true for the IPL. Over the course of 15 years of this memorable tournament, we have borne witness to see absolute unknown quantities seize their moments and become household names right in front of our very own eyes.
Whether it was with the bat or ball, all they needed was an opportunity which was never provided to them up until now. This year’s IPL is nothing different, as there are a number of players eagerly waiting to grab this golden opportunity with both hands to showcase their talent.
With that being said, let us have a look at 5 uncapped players who could make this edition of IPL 2023 their own-
1. Yashasvi Jaiswal – RR
The 21-year-old had a pretty promising season up the order for the Royals. Guided by the effervescent
Buttler, he overcame a sluggish start and grew from strength to strength in batting department. His quick and brisk starts coupled with a couple of fifties ensure that he will be central to the Royals plans come this season. And for that to happen he will have to perform way better than his 258 runs that he scored in last year’s tournament if the Royals want to win their first IPL since 2008.
2. Abhishek Sharma – SRH
The young Punjab batsman was one of the bright spots in an otherwise bleak season for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. With then skipper Kane Williamson seemingly unable to perform in every single game, the scoring burden on top of the order fell squarely upon the young batsman’s shoulder, and he did not disappoint at all. The southpaw scored 426 runs in the 14 matches he played at a strike rate of close to 135.
This year, expectations will be high considering the outlay put on getting in quality additions to the side. With a new opening partner this year for the Orange army, the responsibility of setting the tempo up the order will once again fall on Sharma’s young shoulders. But this time he is prepared for it.
3. Riyan Parag- RR
Time is running out for the young Assamese batter to prove his worth to the Royals, and this season could go a very long way in determining his future with the franchise. The talent and the quality is visible to everyone. But Parag has been in the spotlight for reasons which does not include his performances with either bat or ball.
His brash demeanor and borderline overconfidence has made him an easy target for both opposition players and pundits alike. This season is a perfect opportunity to dispel that narrative and prove it to everyone that he is more than just the brash and overconfident kid he portrays himself to be.
4. Jitesh Sharma – PBKS
Jitesh Sharma was one of the finds of the tournament last year, with his swashbuckling power-hitting at the death more of than not putting a floundering Punjab Kings in a position of strength. His performances in the tournament even got him an India call-up.
And that should spur him on to even better things this year. With a vacuum in the keepers spot and with no nailed on replacement for Pant, Jitesh could very well take this opportunity to stake his claim in the keeper sweepstakes.
5. Dewald Brevis- MI
The only overseas uncapped player in this list, the buzz around this young boy was palpable when Mumbai bought him in last year’s auction. And sure enough he showed the world why. After brutalizing Rahul Chahar for 29 in an over which saw him cart 4 sixes in that over, Brevis announced himself on the world’s biggest stage of them all.
Striking at over 140, and flexing his muscle in the CPL and the recently concluded SA20, Brevis enters this IPL with much more nuance and experience. Time for him to show how much he’s grown.
