IPL 2022: Following a humiliating 18-run defeat to the Lucknow Super Giants at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on April 16, the Mumbai Indians’ dreadful IPL 2022 campaign resumed in earnest. This was MI’s sixth consecutive defeat this season, and they have yet to earn their first point of the season.
Meanwhile, a dejected Rohit Sharma accepted full responsibility for his team’s failure to win a run chase for the second time. Rohit, who opened the batting with rookie Ishan Kishan, managed just six runs before getting removed. Thus, putting pressure on the team from the get-go. The captain also admitted that he had fallen short of the standards set by the rest of the squad.
It’s difficult to single out a specific situation: Rohit Sharma
“While it is difficult to single out one specific instance when pursuing a total, large partnerships are required. This is something that we did not achieve today. There is no special reason for that; we strive to put the team first rather than the individual,” Rohit remarked in the post-match press conference.
One notable partnership emerged during Mumbai’s valiant pursuit of 200 runs, and it was a 64-run stand between Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma for the fourth wicket. In their absence, the batters who came after them were unable to rise to the occasion, and the previous champions were reduced to 181/9 despite late contributions from Kieron Pollard, who struck 25 runs off 14 deliveries. Despite this, the Mumbai Indians were unable to match the high asking rate in the last overs of the game.
Rohit details the points:
“We have already lost six games in a row. We are trying to figure out what the best combination is for us. But it all depends on who we are playing against. When you lose games, it is extremely simple to point out that substitutions are being made. But we aim to stick with our strongest starting lineup,” he said.
“I accept full responsibility for not placing the squad in a position where they are not getting what they want from me. I am confident in my ability to go out there and enjoy the game. This is while continuing to do what I have been doing for the last many years. It is critical to have a forward-looking perspective. We have come back before, and we will attempt to come back again. It is not the end of the world,” Rohit Sharma said.
After the Mumbai Indians suffered their sixth straight defeat on Saturday, a visibly upset Rohit Sharma accepted “all responsibility” for the team’s poor IPL season. Rohit himself had a nightmare of a campaign, scoring just 114 runs in six games and finishing in last place. The team has some amazing young talents but does not look to be in any sort of form.
They are the punching bags of IPL 2022 and this would be so disappointing for the fanbase that has seen them be on top for so many years. Well, it will be interesting to see how the former champs respond now, as one more loss would mean an early exit!!
